Treasure Hunting

I went treasure hunting today, which I haven't done in a while. I found some great stuff, here are a few of my favorites:

Vintage painted tin trays. They have little stands on the bottoms! There were two!

A new state plate! I didn't know Arkansas is "The Wonder State"!

A deer to join my collection of largish white animal figurines! I have a snail and a fawn as well.

This is a Christmas gift for my friend who also appreciates old things. It's a vintage mirrored compact. I also have a small collection of these, but this floral one isn't so much my style, but happens to be hers!

A fruit bag! It's design is made of tiny plastic beads which seem to be glued on. Actually as I was typing this, my friend who I bought it for as a Christmas gift came over, so I gave it to her early! :)

Citrus Chiffon Pie

I made this Citrus Chiffon Pie two days ago and topped it with candied orange peels. I'd never made candied citrus peels, but it was surprisingly simple!

We sell these pies by the slice at work, which is why there are so many citrus knots on the pie...I think it'd be lovely with just one in the middle.

I'm going to try to figure out how to shape them into bows!

Drag Queen Bingo!

I wore this last night to meet the girls for Drag Queen Bingo at our favorite bar. We had an awesome time!

I of course wanted to get dolled up, but had been working all day so still wanted to be comfy. Enter this vintage bright turquoise nightie I found at a thrift store. Belted, I think it totally works as a dress and I love the angel sleeves and black trim!

I rarely curl my hair, but when I do I wish I took the time to do it more!

I added the headband, because you should over accessorize on occasions such as this.

I love this bracelet...I've been into solid black jewelry lately. I don't wear a lot of jewelry, but I really like the simplicity of shiny black.

The evening was hosted by Deonna Sage who can not only do freaking back flips and splits in 4 inch heels, but also has the sweetest ass of anyone I've ever seen.

I only got this crappy picture, but she was fanning herself after her acrobatic performance.

I wore this outfit out Saturday night for a couple of drinks and some dancing! I got the top on clearance for like 5 dollars, because it had a big hole in the back which I fixed up!

This is my new Betsey bag, which has been on my wish list for months! Yay!

I found some sandals I actually like! I found them at some place called Shoe Carnival or something ridiculous like that. I like that they're simple, shiny, and not gladiators.

I redid my turquoise stripe, which had faded out a bunch. It's really bright this time!

I found this amazing print a couple of weeks ago at a thrift store and finally got around to revamping the brown wood frame with red paint and glitter! I'm tempted to add more to the frame...Little trinkets and marigolds and things...We'll see.

My best friend Thalia gave this as a gift to me the last time she visited. She found it at the Salvation Army and decided I needed to own it. It's actually a Christmas ornament and came with a story...Apparently it used to be a tradition to hang a pickle ornament on the Christmas tree and whoever located it first got to have a special present! I tied it onto my lamp with a ribbon until I can use it for its intended purpose.

My Milkshake

You guys might remember a few weeks back when I bought this vest on ebay.

Well, the last couple of days I've found some time to work on it! I had to take it in a lot. The cut was very 90s butch.

I painted the milkshake on the back and added some pins on the front and here's what I have so far.

I originally planned to add some pink studs somewhere, but now I'm not sure. I think it may be too much. What do you guys think? (I started to add some to the collar, but I'm not sure...I think it's the back that needs something, if anything.)

I really love sweetheart necklines and these would be so easy for Summer and would be easily paired with anything.

Cherry Blossom Festival Time!

Someone ordered a cherry blossom themed cake at work and this is what I came up with. I made the blossoms out of gumpaste and the cake was requested strawberry cake with strawberry buttercream.

I painted this shelf shiney black a few weeks ago and it really revamped it! I keep shoes on it now, as well as my sunglasses.

I wore this today to have lunch with my Mom and a friend.

The weather was amazing, but still too cool for bare legs for me because I'm a wuss.

This is the first time I've worn this dress even though I've had it for almost a year. I really love the print, the shape, and most of all the little bows on the sleeves and waist! It's very old, but whoever had it before me hemed it short.

Quality vs. Quantity

I'm not a rich girl. I'm more of a works-hard-to-break-even girl. I've had to be frugal for years when stocking my wardrobe, and I've ended up with a wonderfully eclectic collection.

I've had even less wiggle room than usual in the financial department lately and it's had me thinking about the coming seasons and realizing how vast my wardrobe already is!

I've decided to start focusing on obtaining quality pieces that I really love over "filler" pieces that I may wear a couple of times here and there. Purchasing quality staples to anchor my collection is the idea.

I've been thinking about what that means exactly and I think it's different for every one. For me, it's saving up for the Betsey Johnson bag that I love over spending money at mall stores, etc. I'll be pondering this more and I'll post what I come up with.

In the mean time, what are your wardrobe staples?

I never cook. I'm really just not good at it and I don't really enjoy it either. I bake for a living, which might make that odd, but they're so different!

Anyway, I woke up today and was craving a po' boy and fried pickles!

I didn't really know how to adapt a po' boy to be vegetarian, so I Googled it and found this most delicious recipe!

My first at-home frying experience!

Sweet Tea a brewin'!

Tofu Po' Boy, Fried Pickles, Cole Slaw and Remoulade!

Chili Cornmeal Crusted Tofu

30 min | 20 min prep

SERVES 6

* canola oil, for frying
* 1 lb extra firm tofu, drained and pressed
* 1 cup unsweetened soymilk
* 2 tablespoons cornstarch
* 1 cup cornmeal
* 2 tablespoons chili powder
* 1 teaspoon cumin
* 1-2 teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
* 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
* 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
* 1 tablespoon lime zest

1. Slice the tofu block into 8 slices, widthwise. Then cut each slice in half diagonally, to make 16 triangles.
2. Using a wide shallow dish, add the soymilk and cornstarch and wisk until well combined, and cornstarch is completely disolved.
3. In another shallow dish, combine the cornmeal, spices, salt and zest, and gently wisk to combine.
4. Heat about 1/4 inch canola oil in a skillet over medium heat.
5. Dip each tofu triangle into the soymilk mixture, and then dredge completely in the seasoned cornmeal mixture.
6. When oil is hot, fry pieces in skillet for about 3 minutes on each side, I usually do 6-8 pieces at a time.
7. Drain on paper towels.
8. Serve plain, or on grilled rolls with vegan mayo, lettuce and tomato!

Victoria's Secret is having some sort of amazing clearance. Included in said clearance are the red patent leather Betsey Johnson mary janes with ribbon that I'm still paying off on my Victoria's Secret card. They're now a fraction of the price...Damnit.

I've also been eying these studded stilettos, but haven't been able to decide (or tell by the site's crappy angled pictures) if the toe is too long and pointy or if I'll really be able to function in them with their 4 1/4 inch heel and no platform.

In my other browsings, I am happy to see the blue suede Steve Madden platforms back in stock! Woot...Not that my budget will have any of that at the moment.

Christmas Wreath

Today, I sadly had to take down the Christmas tree and other decorations. I know it's a bit late, but I made my first wreath this year and snapped a picture of it before I took it down.

I painted jingle bells black and white, added cherries and a bow and that was it!

I think next, I'm going to make one for Valentine's Day, which happens to be my favorite holiday!

I wore this today to meet my in-laws for coffee.

I got this dress last year and this is actually the first time I can remember wearing colored tights. And I liked it.

I had a fantastic pair of pewter t-strap Fryes, but they were sort of slippery and I have a fear of slipping on the soles of my shoes in public.

We are lucky enough to have a spare bedroom in our apartment and instead of letting it go to waste as just storage space, I've decided to spread out my wardrobe and make a pretty, feminine oasis out of it!

It's a work in progress, but I've got all of my clothes hung neatly in the closet and on racks, and my purses and shoes organized on shelves.

I've added a pretty chair, made a pair of black and white striped curtains, and my dress form serves as a mannequin when not in use.

I really wish I could paint, but we'll be moving again before too long, so I don't want to get that involved. If I could, I'd paint it pink though...Or even better...A bold floral wallpaper!!

I have plans to hang a few pictures, paint the furniture glossy black and hopefully find a soft and shaggy rug to tie it all together!

I found the most glorious chair while browsing at Marshall's the other day. Marshall's has become one of my favorite spots for home decor on the cheap (glittery deer head).

It's shiny black patent leather and I've lovingly placed it in my new dressing room!

Ornament Making Party

I recently threw an ornament making party where a bunch of girls came over and...made ornaments and drank peppermint hot chocolate and cider and ate gingerbread cupcakes with orange cream cheese icing!

I put my "fireplace" on the TV and we all had a great time!

I didn't take many pictures at all because my memory card was full, but here are two of the room.

I've been doing a little bit more to the apartment. We put up a beautiful Christmas tree, a glittery deer head, I decorated the long horns, and put a disco ball in the bathroom.

Hey guys! I'm hoping you can help me with a problem. I have these two fantastic vintage pieces in my closet, but I just can't figure out how to wear them!

The first is a dress. For this time of year, I'm thinking it'd be cute and play on its 60s-ness with some white tights and a cardigan, but I'm having trouble figuring out what shoes would work. The closest I've come to is black flats, but I'd rather something else.

The second is this old embroidered western shirt. When I try it with jeans, it looks way too authentic. How would you wear it without looking like you were stepping straight out of the Wild West?

Since I've moved, the nearest Forever 21 is now over an hour away. While this is good for my wallet, it makes me long for the cheap goodness even more. I've found before, things can look great on their website, but in person either look off, or fit off. I think this may be the case with these wonderfully inexpensive satin mini skirts in both black and white, as well as the black bandage skirt above them. I can totally see the peacock maxi under one of the faux fur numbers two posts before this one though.
